IntakeIQ Introduces Dual Bank Account Routing to Help Law Firms Maintain Trust Accounting Compliance
IntakeIQ now supports dual bank account routing, automatically separating trust and operating funds to help law firms stay compliant from the first payment.
Alexandria, VA — March 19, 2026 — IntakeIQ today announced the release of Dual Bank Account Routing, a new feature designed to help law firms maintain compliance with legal trust accounting rules by automatically separating client funds and operating revenue at the point of payment.
Handling client funds is one of the most strictly regulated aspects of legal practice. In virtually every U.S. jurisdiction, attorneys are required to deposit client funds into a trust account (often an IOLTA account) rather than a firm’s operating account. Even unintentional commingling of funds can lead to disciplinary action, malpractice exposure, and reputational damage.
Despite these requirements, many legal intake and payment systems still rely on manual reconciliation to ensure payments are deposited into the correct account.
IntakeIQ’s new dual routing capability is designed to eliminate that risk by embedding trust account compliance directly into the intake workflow.
Through the platform’s integration with Stripe, law firms can now connect and designate two separate bank accounts within their payment configuration:
- a Trust / IOLTA account for client funds
- an Operating account for firm revenue
Once configured, intakeIQ automatically routes payments to the correct destination based on the nature of the transaction.
For example, consultation retainers and other client funds are automatically directed to the firm’s trust account, while operating charges are routed to the operating account. This automation removes the need for manual transfers or reconciliation steps that can introduce compliance risk.
“Trust accounting rules exist to protect clients, but many firms still rely on manual processes to stay compliant,” said Yousef Ahmad, founder of IntakeIQ. “We wanted to remove that risk entirely by ensuring funds are routed correctly the moment a payment is made.”
In addition to automated routing, the feature includes several safeguards designed to prevent accidental commingling. The system requires firms to designate two distinct bank accounts and will reject any configuration that attempts to assign the same account as both trust and operating. IntakeIQ also records the account type associated with each payment transaction, creating a clear audit trail for internal accounting and compliance reviews.
The company has also introduced a trust compliance indicator on the client-facing payment screen, signaling to clients that their funds are being handled in accordance with legal trust accounting standards.
Dual Bank Account Routing is particularly relevant for law firms that process a high volume of consultations or retainers through their intake systems, including practices focused on personal injury, immigration, family law, and criminal defense.
The feature is available immediately for firms using intakeIQ with Stripe Connect.
